Native to Ontario

Blooms: June to October
Habitat: Dry open woods and prairies.

Height: up to 1.5 m

​Flower: Up to 10 cm.  A dense cone of brownish disk flowers surrounded by drooping purple ray flowers.

​The genus name is from the Greek ​echino​ meaning "hedgehog" alluding to the appearance of the spiny central disk.
