Genus: Geranium
Geranium, wild

Native to Ontario

Blooms: May to June
Habitat: Meadows and woods

"Geranium" means crane, and another common name for this wildflower is "cranesbill" referring to the shape of the seed case.   When ripe, this pod pops and catapults seeds as far as 9 m.

The seed has a tail called an awn which curls when dry and straightens when wet, enabling the seed to creep very slowly along the ground until it finds a suitable hole or crack in which to germinate.
